The more I visit New Mexico, the harder it is for me to leave! My hostesses, Liliana and Bailey, welcomed me into their desert paradise <3
On the largest prominence in a valley of the Pecos River, rests a time-capsule of Pueblo life before Western influence. The only sign of the Spanish mission is the foundations, as it was rightfully burned to the ground by the residents, weary of Spanish occupation.
Quiet, punctuated by howling gusts of wind helped me imagine life on the settlement at Pecos National Historic Park (https://www.nps.gov/peco/index.htm) 500 years ago.
To the East, North, and West native peoples of the Pueblos and Plains interacted with the settlement.
The dramatic peaks and valleys of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains are ever present.
We experienced the magical Ojo Caliente Spa (https://ojosparesorts.com/ojo-caliente/). A place visited by many tribes for many hundreds of years, now a retreat seamlessly intertwined with the Rio Ojo Caliente River Valley. We covered ourselves in mud and baked in the sun. Found peace in the private baths (complete with wood fire!). Dined in the historic hotel, with a warm glow radiating from us.
The culinary experience was extended with trips to
Restaurant Martin and the
Apothecary Kitchen. They DID. NOT. DISSAPOINT.
